Attenuation of Seismic Waves in Partially Saturated Berea Sandstone as a Function of Frequency and Confining Pressure

چکیده

Frequency-dependent attenuation (1/Q) should be used as a seismic attribute to improve the accuracy of methods and imaging subsurface. In rocks, 1/Q is highly sensitive presence saturating fluids. Thus, could crucial monitor volcanic hydrothermal domains explore hydrocarbon water reservoirs. The experimental determination teleseismic (i.e., for frequencies < 100 Hz) challenging, consequence, still uncertain broad range lithologies conditions. Moreover, physics elastic energy absorption 1/Q) often poorly constrained understood. Here, we provide series measurements wave dynamic Young’s modulus dry partially saturated Berea sandstone in 1–100 Hz bandwidth confining pressure ranging between 0 20 MPa. We present systematic relationships frequency-dependent liquid saturation, pressure. Seismic Attenuation in Partially Saturated Dime-shaped Cracks

We have examined the effect of surface contamination on the attenuation and stiffness of compressional seismic waves in artificial cylindrical glass cracks that are partially saturated with water. The compression of the gap perpendicularly to its plane reduces the gap volume and forces the water to redistribute within the gap (conservation of volume of an incompressible liquid). On clean surfac...

Low-frequency dispersion and attenuation in partially saturated rocks

A theory is developed for the attenuation and dispersion of compressional waves in inhomogeneous fluid-saturated materials. These effects are caused by material inhomogeneity on length scales of the order of centimeters and may be most significant at seismic wave frequencies, i.e., on the order of 100 Hz. The micromechanism involves diffusion of pore fluid between different regions, and is most...
